St. Alexander Council of Catholic Women at 300 S Cornell Avenue, Villa Park, IL 60181 US - Prison Ministry
Prison Ministry at St. Alexander's is an informal group of men and women who seek to build family and community connections for the imprisoned, especially women and others incarcerated for 'victimless' crimes. They
- sponsor an annual drive to collect children's books and audio- and videotapes for use in 'Aunt Mary's Storybook Project': Imprisoned mothers read the books onto the tapes, and both the book and tapes are given to their children enabling the children to hear their mother's voice reading to them. The project can improve the reading skills of the children (and sometimes the mothers).
- collect and deliver seasonal greeting cards and postage that the prisoners can use to maintain contact with friends and family.
- collect and supply small toiletries, calendars and other small items to distribute to incarcerated women to promote a sense of personal dignity.
- coordinate three annual mailings of a newsletter for prisoners, families and others.
St. Alexander's coordinator for all of the above is Joyce Dempsky, 833-8194, sunshinejld@juno.com
